I should’ve posted this a couple of days ago but it got away from me. Welcome back to the Dev Log!
Today I started learning how to use Reaper along with the new MIDI keyboard I purchased. It was actually very fun. I’ve played instruments for a vast majority of my life, and being able to create music on a much more detailed and personal level is cool.
It was also, a LOT of learning. I mean a lot. I spent just over 2 hours learning the system, and I felt accomplished just getting my VSTs to work. VSTs are plugins that I downloaded from a different company that allowed me to get specific sounds to play when I pressed the keys on my MIDI keyboard.
It took a while to get used to the UI of some of the plugins. I was using Kontakt for a lot of the synth and drum sounds. It was super cool to mix and match different sounds with that plugin.
After messing around for a while, I tried to start making a song. It did not turn out well at all haha. I am not super good at my timing anymore, so I will definitely be utilizing the metronome going forward.
Even though I have nothing that actually came from the 2 hour session, it was a really good learning experience for me with starting something completely new and being able to at least make the noise I want come out of my headphones when I played my MIDI keyboard.
Going forward, I’m going to try to start making some generic drum beat patterns that I can put as a backing track so that coming up with melodies and basslines is easier. I know it’s going to be difficult to keep going as learning so many new things can be tiring, but it can also be very rewarding! Don’t give up on your goals folks. See ya on the next Dev Log!
